I'd a single slide in a series that was a 1x1 ratio rather than the 3x4 of all the others. I reformatted said slide and uploaded it replacing the original. However the change while showing in the media library as correct continues to remain square!!
You can change the slide background image behavior with the Size option next to it. Leaving it at auto will not change the image's ratio or size, even if it's cropped. You can use cover or stretch to fill the whole canvas, or contain to show the image even at the cost of blank spaces.
