I need to get rid of the black top and bottom bars in the slider. Also, how can I add a gradient layer (transparent) on the background to make the background image a bit darker.

What black bars are you referring to exactly ? I've checked your site, but I do not see anything of the sort currently in the slider. Could you please specify it or show a screenshot ? Or did you fix it in the meantime ?
As for the gradient overlay, for example you could add a div layer over the whole slider (100% width and height), set the color, and set its opacity to 0,5 so it will be semi-transparent.

I already played around with the bars.. Sorted.
I will try the div layered gradient as suggested.
I feel some of the functionalities of the slider are not working properly. For example, I activated the next/before slider arrows but the arrow is not appearing on the slider.

What skin are you using for that slider ? The 'noskin' skin hides all GUI elements, including the nav arrows.
