    Urgent....

It had been a while since I wanted to perform edits on the LayerSlider WP slides for www.accumetricsllc.com. It was previously the free version of the plugin. Today when I tried to edit the existing slider #16, I was unable to select any of the layers and when I entered the preview, the entire content was deleted. This happened to several of my sliders as I tried to figure out what was going on.

I was able to at least show a slider on the home page, a previous version, which is not the one I want to show.

My sense is that you are driving people to buy the plugin, which I conceptually have no problem with. However, it would have been very helpful to have a message pop up which in the WordPress site saying it needed to be purchased, rather than destroying a professional colleague's work, as is done now. This really is a hostile approach.

What I would like to know now is, if I delete the existing plugin and replace it with purchased plugin, will I lose all of the existing sliders?

At this time I have no way to see the slide transition data and will have to recreate everything from scratch is on installing the new, purchased plugin will delete all of the previously created sliders.

    Dear Valerie,

Thank you for getting in touch with us. My name is John and I'm happy to assist you today. I appreciate your patience while we've been working towards your ticket.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having difficulties with LayerSlider. I can assure you that this issue is not intentional and in no way our strategy. What I can think of is some sort of incompatibility with one of the installed plugins or your WordPress theme. We're dedicated to optimize the plugin to avoid issues like this. Nevertheless, incompatibilities do happen from time to time even if we follow every standard and recommendation.

Your sliders are stored in the database, so deleting the plugin files and re-uploading the new version will not touch them and you can access them when the reinstall is complete.

However, in all likelihood, the issue that caused all the trouble will remain as well. I'd recommend temporarily  disabling all the plugins and switching to the default WP theme to see if it's a 3rd party issue. If the issue goes away, then it's cased by a 3rd party item and you can trace it back by re-enabling the plugins one at a time. When the issue resurfaces, you will know which one causes the troubles.

If you could provide us a temporary WP admin access we can also take a look at the issue.

Also, server hosting companies usually make automatic backups from your database, which could be used to bring back your lost work.

    Dear Valerie,

Thank you for providing the temporary access to your site.

After I've logged in, I've noticed that you're using a really-really old version of LayerSlider. It's such an outdated release that I can't even tell the exact release date, but it's at least 6 years old.

The plugin has grown so much in the meantime. It received countless new features, bug fixes and improvements. Not to mention WordPress compatibility patches. Realising this, it's completely possible that the issue was due to the outdated version and updating the plugin should eliminate it.

You can download the latest release from your CodeCanyon downloads page. The version number of the latest release is 6.8.1. Once you've downloaded the new version, you can deactivate and remove the old release, then install the new one. Your sliders and settings are in the database, removing the plugin won't touch them.

However, considering the 6 years gap between the releases, it's definitely a good idea to keep a backup copy from everything. The plugin files as well as your sliders' export code.

    Best Regards,

    Hi John,

I have deleted the old plugin and installed the new one. The layer slider is working now, although I still have lost the data from a few of the sliders. I appreciate your quick responses for getting a working version of the plugin operating.

Since you had a very outdated version, I don't think we can do anything to recover them from our part. Throughout the years we've added many safety mechanism to the plugin to avoid such issues. The only solution I can think of is the server hosting. They should provide automatic database backups from which we can recover the sliders.
