I've updated Layer Slider's license to the newest version, but it still will not update past version 5.1.1. It says it's up to date and will not allow to update.

Unfortunately some really old versions -such as yours- might not be able to utilize the auto-update feature anymore, as that method was changed since then.
I'd recommend to manually update the plugin by downloading the newest release from CodeCanyon and reinstalling LayerSlider.
You will need to completely remove the current version first, as there cannot be two instances of the plugin present on your installation.
Please note that your sliders and settings are stored in the database so they won't be deleted in the process.
