I would like to have my slides with one video behind them as the words cycle...right now the video starts over with every slide. Is there a way to have the video be the background image of the slider and the slides just be the words?

Unfortunately slide backgrounds and video backgrounds will restart when the slideshow advances. However as an alternate solution, you could use only one slide. Add the video to the background and animate all the layers on it with delays. The timeline view can help a lot with setting up the timings.
Is there a good tutorial on animating the layers? I tried to do it that way but it didn't work ... I have 6 text layers...is there a way to combine two text boxes into one layer?
There are many demo sliders that feature complex layer animations and effects. You can import them from the Template Store to see what settings we used and how we set them up exactly.
Unfortunately you cannot merge layers, but you can copy paste layer styles, or you can just manually copy and add the content of one to the other.
