The play button does not show up on the video until it is clicked once. I'm sure it is a setting I've missed. We are using Vimeo. Could you show mw what I am doing wrong?

Please check the Controls option in the Layers -> Content tab of the video layer. If you set it to Enabled, the controls or buttons should show.
Thanks for your response. Where is the enable button exactly? This is what I see under layers. See attached (layer controls). It shows the play button on the back end of layerslider, but not on the front end. Also attached.
Thank you for the feedback. It looks like something is hiding the slider's default play button that is applied on videos. My colleagues and I will look into this further to see what we can find, and get back to you shortly.
It seems like the plugin tries to load a skin named 'Jupiter'. I believe it's related to your theme (Jupiter). But this skin is not available, the slider cannot load it, so there is no play button or any other skin related controls. Please select a different skin for the slider, that should solve the problem.

As I can see you are using an outdated version of the plugin. That is why you cannot see that setting either.
Please update LayerSlider to the latest version, we have included several improvements and fixes (for videos as well) since the release you are using.

I updated to the latest version, and the control tab is there, I clicked enabled, but it still doesn't show the play button on load.
