I have have tried duplicating a slider, creating a new name for it. I would like to use it as a base for my next slider. However, I cannot find how to save it as a new slider with a new short code. How do I save and get a new shortcode.

You can duplicate a slider in the sliders list, by clicking on the small arrow icon on the chosen slider and selecting Duplicate. This will double it and give the second a new ID and shortcode.
That's not possible. If you duplicate a slider, the new one's name will have 'copy' in it, and its ID will be one higher. So for example the shortcode [layerslider id="472"] into [layerslider id="473"] and the name "XY" into "XY copy". Are you sure you're doing it the correct way ? You will need to make this in the sliders list, not inside the slider.

It doesn't. I duplicate, even give a new name, but it stills keeps the same shortcode
