Wide black bars swipe across my slide preview and then the preview stalls. However, the slide is working when I visit the live page. It started when I tried to add a text layer over the existing image layers. I removed the text layer, but the problem persists.

There is no issue like this present in the latest release of our plugin (6.7.1.), so unfortunately it is most likely a conflict problem on your installation or a server configuration issue. To start troubleshooting please try to temporary disable other plugins and switch to a default WP theme to see if that solves the issue. Please also check the LayerSlider System Status, located in the Options menu on the WP sidebar, for any related error messages that could provide more information.
I am currently using the Avada theme and up until a few days ago had no compatibility issues. Avada, so I was told, was designed to sync with Layer Slider and vice versa. I am reluctant to switch themes. I have already checked the LS system status and followed instructions to empty the cache. I have also temporarily disabled the WP super Cache plugin to no avail. All other plugins have been operating well with Avada & WP Layer Slider for well over a year. The problem began when I added a text layer and the slider preview went awry. I checked another slider and the preview slide is distorted as well.
Thank you for testing the sliders. I switched from Safari 11.0.2 to Chrome and the black streaks disappeared. It appears to be a browser issue as you suggested. The Layer Slider preview is now functioning normally—terrific plugin by the way. Fun to use with magical results!
From what I have observed the problem seems to have corrected itself on Safari. My only intervention was to enter preferences and change the designated site magnification from 115% to %100. Perhaps that had some bearing on the LS preview pane. I had no idea Safari was saving magnification preferences for websites I visit regularly. The slider is operating normally on both browsers.

Thank you for the feedback. Please set up a temporary WP login for us so we can look at the problem to see what might be wrong.
Thank you, the login worked. I've checked all your sliders, but I couldn't reproduce the issue on my end. The black bars didn't appear for me.
In what OS/browser/device are you experiencing exactly ?
In the meantime you could also try to see if it happens on a different device/desktop or in a different browser. To see if it's a localized issue.

Any ideas on how Safari is disrupting the plugin?

There shouldn't be any issue on Safari either. The plugin was tested on it, and we do not see the bars in Safari either.
Do you experience this on other devices/desktops as well with Safari, or only on the current one ?
