The problem seems to have resolved on it's own after a few hours. I'm not sure why that was the case. Is this typical? It makes me worried to install upgrades because of things like this that happen.

No, this kind of issue shouldn't happen under normal circumstances.
You can change your email address in your Ticksy profile page, that can be accessed at the top right corner by clicking the Edit Profile button.
