I received an email from Envato saying there was an update to Layerslider6. Do I need to download the update or will it automatically update on my site?

You can update the plugin manually or with its auto-update feature.
If you decide to update manually, you will need to download the latest release from CodeCanyon and reinstall the plugin.
In case you would like to go with the auto-update method, you will have to navigate to the WordPress Plugins or Dashboard -> Updates page and update there.
