I have purchased the layer slider at Themeforest and downloaded it. Do I just upload it to my dashboard so you know I've actually bought it and am not just using the version that came with the Theme?
In case you have the plugin from a theme already installed on your site, you will need to disable and then remove the current version first. After that you can manually install the new release that you can download from CodeCanyon. Your sliders and settings are stored in the database so they won't be deleted in the process.
